DescriptionSinn Féin Chairman Mitchell McLoughlin has said the Irish Government must oppose any attempt to reintroduce direct rule in the North.

Mr McLoughlin was speaking during a meeting of the party's Ard Chomhairle in Dublin.

He said Sinn Féin's negotiating team would be working with the British and Irish governments over the weekend to try to make the necessary progress before crucial talks at Leeds Castle in Kent next week.

Mr McLoughlin told reporters the party was not prepared for failure and would be going into negotiations with a 'can do attitude' rather than legislating for failure.

He added that the real issue is whether or not the DUP was capable of doing a deal, and that it depended on the DUP abandoning its anti-agreement attitude and making progress based on the Good Friday Agreement.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams and Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness briefed the Ard Chomhairle this morning on ongoing contacts with the two governments.

Mr McLoughlin's comments follow yesterday's discussions between the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, and the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

Afterwards, Mr Ahern said he sincerely believed a deal could be done with the DUP that would see power-sharing restored to the North.
