Description | Bemidji incorporated as a village, May 20, 1896.
Bemidji is a historically charming, progressive and beautiful north woods city to visit and is home to 12,073 persons. Bemidji offers the finest selection of shopping as well as the best in education, recreation, medical care and government services.
Bemidji is an Ojibwe word "Bay-may-ji-ga-maug" meaning "lake with cross waters" referring to the Mississippi River which crosses Lake Bemidji. Bemidji is a "golden city" along the river's bank, only miles from where the mighty Mississippi River begins its 2,552 mile journey to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico, a city at the center of the legends of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.
No visit to Bemidji is complete without a visit to the Tourist Information Center located on the shores of Lake Bemidji. Here stand the famous statutes of Paul and Babe. These statues were constructed in 1937 to portray the legendary lumberjack Paul Bunyan and his pet ox Babe. Also, the Bemidji's Sculpture Walk starts at the Tourist Information Center and is a must for visitors and residents to enjoy. Bemidji a great place to live, visit and do business!
