Description | This seat contains some of the most strife-ridden areas of the city. Although it has a predominantly unionist population, there is a significant minority of Catholics (approximately 40%) with some well-known Catholic enclaves in the seat. Aside from some of the more rundown parts of the city centre, which are currently enjoying rejuvenation, the seat extends up along the Antrim Road into some more pleasant residential areas. With a four-way contest between the UUP, DUP, SDLP and Sinn Fein in 1997, this was one of the most interesting contests to watch in Northern Ireland. When all four parties stood in 1997, the DUP won with only 27% of the vote, but in 2001 they won much more easily with 41%. The DUP's Nigel Dodds took the seat in 2001, defeating the long-standing UUP member, Cecil Walker.
