Description | This seat consists of the old Dundee West constituency, including two wards that were shared with Dundee East, plus two wards from the old Dundee East constituency and one ward from the old Angus constituency. Once known as the city of 'jute, jam and journalism', the three industries that gave it fame and prosperity, Dundee is re-inventing itself, with a considerable degree of success, increasing tourism and investment. The jute mills are all gone but this constituency is home to the city's two Universities, Abertay, a centre of excellence for computer science and games technology, and Dundee, known for bio-medical and cancer research. Dundee West also has an impressive shopping mall which attracts visitors from as far afield as Aberdeen, searching for a bit of retail therapy.
