Winston Churchill was Dundee's most famous MP. He represented the city in the early 1900s, and the intervening period has seen much change. Dundee was once known for "jute, jam and journalism", but with the jute mills long closed, is now marketed as a modern "City of Discovery".
Industries like food-processing remain important in Dundee West, but new high-tech firms have set up and the area has gained a reputation as a centre of excellence in computer gaming. Regeneration projects have resulted in many changes to the cityscape and high rises have given way to new private-sector homes. Dundee West takes in the city's two universities, its airport, and is home to Dundee and Dundee United football clubs, whose stadiums are opposite each other.
The seat has a history of returning Labour MPs, with the party's Jim McGovern holding it in 2010 with a 7,278 vote majority.
