Description | This constituency comprises the whole of the old Cunninghame North seat plus five wards from the old Cunninghame South seat. The constituency's make-up ranges from affluent retirement and commuting areas in the north - the towns of Largs, Fairlie and West Kilbride - to the rather grimmer industrial belt to the south from Ardrossan to Kilwinning. Inland, the seat takes in the Garnock valley towns of Dalry, Beith, Kilbirnie and Glengarnock; once home to a thriving steel industry, as well as textiles, now all in decline. Once holiday hotspots, the coastal towns of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston have high unemployment. However a major commercial and residential development at Ardrossan Harbour, plus a big clean-up operation along Saltcoats beach, has gone some way to enticing visitors back to the area. The seat has two nuclear power stations, Hunterston A and B. Hunterston A is being decommissioned, but B is still in production.
