| Description |
Region was preceded by the Arkhangelsk Governorate, formed in 1708. Region was under the control of the Entente and White Army troops during the Russian Civil War and used as a base of operations until January 14, 1929. Region is known primarily for its many shipping and Russian Navy centers and nuclear-armed submarine bases. Region is more commonly called Pomorie by the local residents.
