U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture
The primary purpose of the U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture is to draw attention to global problems of hunger and food security, to communicate and demonstrate America’s compassion for people in need, and to ensure proper stewardship of U.S. resources provided to benefit the poor and hungry.
As headquarters of the three principal UN organizations dedicated to food and agriculture – the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Program and the International Fund for Agricultural Development – Rome is the center of international efforts to promote sustainable agricultural development and combat world hunger.
The U.S. Mission in Rome serves as a link between the Rome-based international organizations and the U.S. government. With staff representing the Departments of State, Agriculture, and the Agency for International Development, the U.S. Mission works to advance UN efforts in the areas of emergency food aid, food quality and safety standards, agriculture, fisheries, forests, and rural development.
The Mission also promotes the efficient functioning of the UN organizations. As the largest contributor to the UN system worldwide, the United States has a large stake in ensuring that the organizations are well run and that their activities complement and enhance U.S. national and foreign policy objectives.
The UN agencies the UN Mission in Rome works closely with:
Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)
World Food Program (WFP)
The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)
Our Mission also manages U.S. relations with three smaller international organizations based in Rome: UNIDROIT (the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law), ICCROM (the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property) and IDLO (the International Development Law Organization).
