Description |
The seat itself covers a large area, curling around the top bend of East Anglia. Never extending more than 12 miles inland, the constituency includes agricultural land, near-unspoilt coastline, the Norfolk Broads, a couple of nature reserves and more than its fair share of country houses. The pace of life is slow, and the inhabitants, of whom a good many are pensioners, have seen little change since the days of Arthur Ransome and his Swallows and Amazons. The main centre of population is Cromer, a seaside resort catering for the dwindling band of holidaymakers who choose to remain in Britain during the summer months, during the off-season it can seem rather quiet. It did, however, provide some electoral excitement in 2001, at a time when that commodity was in fairly short supply. The Lib Dems had had their eye on the seat for some time and finally managed to convert it into the yellow column, with the eye-wateringly tight majority of 0.9%.
