Description |
This geographically vast district embraces the eastern half of Great Slave Lake and stretches across rugged Precambrian shield country to the Nunavut border.
However, the region contains only two small communities, making Tu Nedhe the Northwest Territories' least populous district. Both Fort Resolution (pop. 484) and Lutselk'e (pop. 318) are Chipewyan communities on the shores of Great Slave Lake. Fort Resolution is the Northwest Territories' oldest permanent settlement, founded as a Northwest Co. trading post in 1786. Today, it is linked by road to Fort Smith and Hay River, and is economically dependent on logging, hunting and trapping. Lutselk'e, accessible only by boat or plane, is a largely subsistence hunting and trapping-based community.
