Description The Conservatives have elected their leader by means of a national convention since 1927. There were only two exceptions to this rule, during the war years: Richard Hanson (temporary leader), May 1940 - November 1941, and Arthur Meighen, November 1941 - December 1942. The 1998 Leadership Selection Process encompassed the principles of a direct membership vote weighted by constituency. Votes of Party members across the country were weighted with 100 selection votes (points) for each constituency, regardless of the size of its Party membership or the number of votes cast. The points were distributed among the leadership candidates according to the proportion of the votes cast for them within each constituency.
