Info | Born in Boston, Massachusetts. May 27, 1835 - Died, 1915. The grandson of President John Quincy Adams and the son of Charles Francis Adams Sr., Lincoln's ambassador to Britain, Charles Francis Adams Jr. joined the First Massachusetts Cavalry in 1861. While in the army Adams fought at Antietam and Gettysburg. He left the army in 1865 as a brigadier general.
Adams became a railroad expert after the war. In 1869 he became a member of the Massachusetts Board of Railroad Commissioners and from 1872 to 1879 was chairman of the first such board in the nation. Adams was made chairman of the government directors of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1878 and became president in 1884.
During his time with the Union Pacific Railroad Charles Francis Adams was looking to expand tracks to new locations out west. An opportunity came to help finance the development of land along the Snake River near Lewiston, Idaho. Money was given to a project that would divert water from Asotin Creek with a system of dikes and canals, 18 miles long, to land known as jawbone flats. In 1896 water was available for land and soon after many people moved to Clarkston.
To show appreciation for his financial involvement in the development of Clarkston, when the new high school was built in 1923 it was given his name.
