A member of the Human Services Commission of the National Conference of State Legislatures, Rep. Shear is a member of many civic organizations among which are: the League of Women Voters; Women's Political Caucus; American Jewish Committee and the American Jewish Congress; the American Civil Liberties Union; National Council of Jewish Women; the Miriam Foundation and Hadassah. She is also an auxiliary member of Brandeis University and the Jewish Hospital.

Rep. Shear has received the following significant awards: Women of Achievement/Suburban Journal & KMOX Radio; the Bill of Rights Award; OASIS Award; League of Women Voters; YWCA Special Leadership; Missouri Women's Network; Missouri State Medical Association; Parents as Teachers; NARAL; Ecumenical Housing Organization; Public Employees Outstanding Legislator; Edna Gellhorn Award; and the Sisters of Loretto Award.

Rep. Shear is a 1936 graduate of University City High School, which later established the Sue Shear Young Leadership Award. She furthered her education at Washington University.

Born March 17, 1918, in Glen Carbon, Ill., Rep. currently resides in Clayton. She has three children and four grandchildren.
