Info | HOFFMAN, Josiah Ogden, a Representative from New York; born in New York City, May 3, 1793; pursued classical studies and was graduated from Columbia College in 1812; served for three years in the Navy and was warranted a midshipman in 1814; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1818 and commenced practice in Goshen, Orange County; district attorney of that county 1823-1826; returned to New York City; member of the State assembly in 1825, 1826, and 1828; district attorney of the city and county of New York 1829-1835; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses (March 4, 1837-March 3, 1841); United States district attorney at New York 1841-1845; attorney general of the State November 8, 1853, to November 7, 1855; died in New York City May 1, 1856; interment in St. Mark’s Church vault.
