InfoMargaret M. Chiara is the former twice elected Cass County prosecutor. She became involved in statewide public protection issues through the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan (PAAM). Ms. Chiara was the first and only woman elected to serve as president of PAAM.

Since 1997, Margaret M. Chiara has been engaged in statewide projects focused on the accessibility and accountability of Michigan's trial courts. She served as administrator for the legislatively created 23 member Trial Court Assessment Commission (TCAC). The Commission's task was to determine the trial court workload, to define the relative complexity of civil and criminal caseload, to recommended a court funding formula and method to distribute judicial resources.

In 1999, Ms. Chiara joined the staff of the Office of the Chief Justice at the Michigan Supreme Court. As the policy and planning director, she was primarily responsible for administering the core functions of communications, legislative affairs and intergovernmental relations and coordinating the functions of human resources and finance.

Ms. Chiara was associated with a private law firm in rural Cass County before becoming a prosecutor. Law is Ms. Chiara's second career. For twelve years she was a teacher and educational administrator. Interest in education law and school finance reform led to Rutgers Law School. She has a masters in administration from Pace University and her undergraduate degree is from Fordham University.

During her tenure as United States Attorney, Margaret M. Chiara has focused her effort on expanding and improving services to people in the forty nine counties that constitute the Western District of Michigan. Her primary objective has been to select, train and retain attorneys and staff who possess an ethic of excellence and provide superior legal service on behalf of the United States. Ms. Chiara initiated a gun violence reduction program known as Project Safe Neighborhoods; she revitalized service to Indian Country and established BRIDGES of Western Michigan, which is a forum for Arab Americans and Muslims to communicate with federal law enforcement and others on matters of mutual interest and concern.
