Info | Laura McDiarmid has always focused on helping people and building communities.
Currently working as an independent consultant for an urban Aboriginal organization, she was formerly the Social Development Director of the Musqueam Indian Band. In this role she fostered the development of a variety of programs to assist children and families, and raised funds from both public and private sources. Laura also has over 23 years of experience with the Ministry of Human Resources where she assisted persons with disabilities, worked with persons with HIV/AIDS, and dealt with employment and childcare issues facing single parents.
Starting in 1996 she also served six years as a Commissioner on the Vancouver Park Board, including terms as Chair and Vice-Chair. Laura acted as liaison to the Hastings and Thunderbird Community Centres, supported the “greening” of Hastings Park, and opposed the proposed construction of a LaFarge Cement plant near New Brighton Park.
A native Vancouverite, Laura is a graduate of Kitsilano high school. She values her family life and spends a great deal of time with her parents, her two grown children, and her grandchild. Her volunteer commitments have included AIDS Vancouver, the Millennium Sport Facility Society, and the Canadian Kidney Foundation.
Laura will be a strong advocate for the constituents of Vancouver-Hastings, offering experience, commitment, integrity, and a strong voice in government.
