Info | Tom Walker is a Vancouver-based social policy research consultant and a long-time advocate of shorter work time. He is the father of two grown daughters and a younger son. He also has a grandson.
In 1995 Tom established the TimeWork Web, an online resource for research on reduced work time. From its founding, TimeWork served as a catalyst bringing together researchers and activists from across North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Tom's 1998 policy proposal for rewarding years of service with more free time was judged one of the "World's Best Ideas" by the Institute for Social Inventions in London, UK. Recently, Tom has collaborated on the content editing of a forthcoming book by Bruce O'Hara, author of the best selling Working Harder Isn't Working.
Among Tom's other shorter work time research achievements are an innovative survey of attitudes toward reduced work time, a comprehensive and critical study of historical literature on the economics of shorter work time and a programmed spreadsheet for estimating the economic feasibility and productivity results of work time reductions. Summing up this research: it shows convincingly that people's aspirations, authoritative economic theory and detailed number crunching all support the move to shorter work time.
