InfoFreeholder John D’Amico, a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, began his distinguished legal career in Freehold as a judicial law clerk. Early in his career he practiced law in Red Bank, after which he became vice president and counsel for a major insurance company.

In the 1970's, John D’Amico became well known throughout the state as a rail commuter advocate. He was founder and chairman of the Irate Shore Commuters and Shore Commuter Coalition, serving on committees concerned with the improvement of public transportation and spearheading many needed reforms.

John D’Amico served for two terms as a Councilman in Oceanport and two terms as a Monmouth County Freeholder. During his tenure as Freeholder, he founded the Monmouth County Department of Transportation and the Office of Recycling. Additionally, he initiated Monmouth County’s “Greenbelt” program for the preservation of open space and the protection of drinking water, and aided the Monmouth County Prosecutor in the creation of the first environmental crimes unit in New Jersey.

John D’Amico served in the New Jersey Senate in 1988 and 1989, during which time he sponsored several key bills on transportation and the environment, including a Green Acres Bond Act and the Clean Water Enforcement Act.

In 1992, he was appointed by the governor as a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, sitting in the Family Part of the Chancery Division and in the Civil Division in Monmouth County. While on the bench, he developed a new, streamlined trial procedure called an “Expedited Jury Trial,” which is now in use statewide. He also authored several published opinions and a number of articles on legal subjects.

On Aug. 1, 2003, Judge D’Amico was appointed Chairman of the New Jersey State Parole Board, where he reformed the Board’s policies and procedures. He established a Community Partnership unit to work with volunteer agencies for the successful integration of offenders in society.

Judge D’Amico retired from the Parole Board in March 2007 and became a consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Corrections, on parole reform. He was elected to a third three-year term on the Board of Chosen Freeholders in November 2007.

As a freeholder, Judge D'Amico oversees Planning, Commerce and Education, which includes Brookdale Community College, Economic Development & Tourism, Planning Board, Superintendent of Schools and the Vocational Board of Education.
