Info | James E. "Jim" West
Mayor West is a third-generation Spokanite. He attended Grant Elementary School and Lewis & Clark High School . After high school, the Mayor joined the U.S. Army and served as a Paratrooper in the elite 82nd Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged and returned to Spokane in the fall of 1974.
In 1978, he graduated from Gonzaga University with a degree in Criminal Justice. He became a police officer and then a deputy sheriff.
In 1982, Mayor West was first elected to the Legislature and served with distinction in state legislative office until his resignation in early December 2003 to take the job of Mayor. He most recently served as the Senate Majority Leader; he also led the Senate's health care and budget committees. Mayor West understands leadership, budgets and dealing with major issues. He has a record of getting things done.
While Mayor West obviously has an exemplary record of public service, he also understands the needs of the private sector. He owned his own sporting goods store in Spokane from 1984 to 1991.
Mayor West believes strongly in service to the community and has volunteered his time to help many non-profits and service organizations. Here are some highlights:
-Member, Rotary International.
-Board Member, Morning Star Boys Ranch.
-Volunteer and Leader, Boy Scouts of America.
-Board Member, Spokane Civic Theatre.
-Board Member, Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC).
-Co-Chairman, School District 81 Citizens' Technology Committee.
-Vice Chairman, Spokane County Health District.
-Member, Spokane Regional Planning Council.
-Member, City of Spokane Retirement Board.
-Member, Spokane County Juvenile Court Citizens Advisory Committee.
For his efforts, Mayor West has been recognized by seven different organizations as "Legislator of the Year." He has received many awards and accolades for his work on budget issues, health care issues and his outstanding support of higher education. He is a past recipient of Eastern Washington University's prestigious President's Medal for his support of the school.
