Gardner; reelected to the Sixty-sixth and Sixty-seventh Congresses and served from November 6, 1917, to June 30, 1921, when he resigned to accept a Treasury position; appointed by President Warren G. Harding to be collector of customs at the port of Boston July 1, 1921, and served until his retirement in 1933; again elected a member of the Essex School Board in 1922, 1925, and 1928; moderator of the town meeting in 1925; died in Essex, Mass., March 28, 1934; interment in Essex Cemetery.
