Info | Mayor Lois Frankel was elected Mayor of West Palm Beach on March 11th, 2003.
As a private citizen and as a state legislator, Lois Frankel has been immersed in the fabric of West Palm Beachs local community since 1974, involving herself with many civic and charitable endeavors.
For fourteen years, Lois served as a member of the Florida House of Representatives representing much of the population of West Palm Beach. In the House, Lois rose to one of the top leadership positions, that of Minority Leader, the first Democratic woman so designated in Florida's history.
While in the legislature, Lois earned a reputation for being an energetic champion of Florida's children, seniors and working families. Lois led efforts to strengthen public school education, reduce family violence, improve access to healthcare, and tackle the tobacco industry's targeting of minors.
Along with her delegation colleagues she helped to secure millions of dollars of projects touching every aspect of our citys life from new roads, to new neighborhood schools, to enhanced cultural programs. The Kravis Center, Grassy Waters Preserve, South Olive Park, Performing Arts School, Broadway Avenue, the Boys and Girls Club and Norton Art Gallery are just a few examples.
Lois community spirit is well known.
As a young lawyer, Lois founded West Palm Beachs first domestic assault shelter now known as Harmony House.
She served as a director of the Actors Workshop and Repertory Company, a local theater group that delighted audiences in the late 1970s.
Lois was a founder and later president of the Palm Beach County Association of Women Lawyers.
Heading an Alzheimer task force, Lois worked with community leaders to create a memory disorder clinic at St. Mary's Hospital.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the Palm Beach County American Cancer Society she chaired its most successful Jail and Bail fund raising drives.
Recognizing her many accomplishments, Lois has received awards from organizations such as Palm Beach County Classroom Teacher Association, Florida Children's Forum, American Lung Association of Florida, Florida League of Conservation Voters, and Weizman Institute. In their Centennial Publication, the Palm Beach Post saluted Lois as one of Palm Beach Countys top local politicians of the 20th century.
On a personal note, Lois Frankel was born in New York. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Boston University and earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. She moved to West Palm Beach in 1974 where she began her law practice and family. Lois currently serves as a mentor to thirteen-year-old Camelia through the Take Stock in Children Program. She is an avid painter in her leisure time.
Lois is the mother of son Benjamin, a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marines.
