Info | John Peyton was sworn in as Mayor of Jacksonville on July 1, 2003. He is only the second Republican to be elected to the Office of Mayor in more than 100 years.
Peyton, who won election in May with 58 percent of the vote, campaigned on the themes of running city government like a business, holding the line on taxes and continuing to grow Jacksonville's economy with good jobs and new businesses.
Prior to his election, the 38-year-old Jacksonville native served as vice president of Gate Petroleum Co., one of the largest privately held corporations in Florida.
In his 10-year leadership at Gate, Peyton ran the company's Florida Retail Division and helped guide the company's transition from service station provider to full-line retail convenience store operation. With $600 million in annual revenues and more than 3,500 employees, Gate Petroleum is on Forbes Magazine's list of America's 500 Largest Private Companies.
In 1996, Peyton began serving on the Jacksonville Transportation Authority board as an appointee of Mayor John Delaney. Peyton became JTA chairman in 1999 and was actively involved in the development and implementation of the $2.2 billion Better Jacksonville Plan, which voters approved in 2000. He resigned from the JTA in June and will appoint his successor.
Peyton also served as chairman of the Jacksonville Symphony Association, where he spearheaded an effort to balance the symphony's operating budget and develop a sustainable business model.
Peyton is a past president (1998-99) of Greenscape of Jacksonville, an organization committed to planting trees in public places and protecting Jacksonville's tree canopy. In 1995, Peyton served on Delaney's transition team. Peyton is a recent graduate of the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program. He is also an alumnus of Leadership Jacksonville and Leadership Florida.
Peyton received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986 from Mercer University, where he served as president of both the Student Government Association and Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity.
In recent years, Peyton has been featured in Florida Trend, Jacksonville Business Journal and Jacksonville Magazine as an outstanding business leader in Northeast Florida. He has also been listed in Who's Who among American Universities and Colleges. Peyton recently married Dr. Kathryn Pearson, a Jacksonville physician. He is a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. And he turns 39 on July 28.
