Info | Howard Mills was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1998. Now in his third term, Mr. Mills serves as the Deputy Minority Leader and sits on the Committees on Ways and Means, Insurance and Housing.
Since his election to the Assembly, Mr. Mills has been an outspoken advocate for reform in Albany. He is sharply critical of the "dysfunctional" New York budget adoption process and has advocated sweeping budget and legislative reform. Assemblyman Mills is also known for championing tougher criminal justice laws, debt reduction, spending restraint, education, agriculture and environmental causes.
Deputy Minority Leader Mills was first elected to public office in 1989, winning the first of two terms as a Councilman in the Town of Wallkill. In 1993, Mr. Mills was elected Wallkill Town Supervisor and was re-elected to that position in 1995 and 1997. As Supervisor, Mills cut taxes, improved the Towns bond rating, reduced the size of government and completed many public works projects, including a landfill closure, three major bridge replacements and a town-wide road improvement program. During his administration, Mills received the Distinguished Budget Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Mr. Mills is a Major in the New York Guard, 56th Brigade. In the wake of September 11, 2001, Assemblyman Mills was briefly called to active duty with the 56th Brigade.
Prior to beginning his career in public service, Mr. Mills served as the Director of Development at Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY, where he was also an adjunct instructor of geography. He has worked as a business consultant to the telecommunications industry and is currently the business development and public relations officer for the Myles Financial Services Group in Florida, NY.
Assemblyman Mills is active in many civic organizations. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Orange County United Way, the New York State United Way, and the Mid-Hudson Alzheimers Association. He is the recipient of many awards for his work in the community, most recently by the Child Care Council of Orange County, The Emergency Medical Services Council, and the 2003 Heart of Gold Community Service Award by Occupations, Inc. Mr. Mills is the only two-time recipient of the Orange County Partnership Most Valuable Partner Economic Development Award, in 1997 and 2002.
Mr. Mills is a 1982 graduate of Pine Bush High School. He received his bachelors degree in 1986 from Marist College, Poughkeepsie, NY and, in 1988, he earned a master of arts in government and public affairs at The American University in Washington, D.C.
Assemblyman Mills and his wife, Erin, reside with their son, H. Jack, in the Town of Hamptonburgh.
