Info | Deian is a 23 year old Latino who lives with Autism and ADHD. At a young age, his single mom worked many minimum wage jobs while struggling to put food on their table. At 11 years ago, he moved to SW Portland where he dealt with abuse and violence by my mother’s partner. Because of this, he went into the foster care system for many years, and went through a time of great change and growth where he settled in Southeast Portland. However, even with all this trauma and horrific events, he sought to help others and always fight for what is right.
At a young age, he saw how the system was failing to protect people from poverty, violence, climate change, and hardship that failed to help them live happy lives full of opportunity, self expression, cultural and racial diversity, and economic mobility. Along with how young men were becoming increasingly socially isolated and women were encountering much suffering. As he talked with more and more people, he realized that we were in the midst of a massive crisis.
He had thought to himself that no society that had this deep and corrosive crisis with everything falling apart at the seams, could survive without bold, comprehensive change and improvement. So he decided to get involved. Since then, he has helped push participatory budgeting to create an economic democracy, served on the Oregon Commission on Autism as a Co-Chair of the Social Services and Adult Supports Subcommittee, focused on the link between opportunity for people with Autism and their health support structures; and fought for ethical government.
Now, Portland is in crisis. Portland Needs Hope. It Needs Solutions.
He asked myself and others if he was ready to help end our crisis and restore good governance, efficacy, kindness, and transparency; our answer was yes.
His name is Deian Salazar and he is running for Portland City Council, District 1.
