Info | MURPHY, James Joseph, a Representative from New York; born in Brooklyn, Kings County, N.Y., November 3, 1898; educated in the public schools of Staten Island, N.Y.; served as a noncommissioned officer with the First New York Cavalry on the Mexican border in 1916; during the First World War served as a sergeant with the One Hundred and Fourth Machine Gun Battalion, Twenty-seventh Division, with service in France and Belgium, 1918-1920; engaged in the import and export shipping business in New York City since 1920; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and Eighty-second Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1953); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1952 to the Eighty-third Congress; New York city councilman for the Borough of Staten Island 1954-1958; freight and shipping broker; resided at Grymes Hill, Staten Island, N.Y., until his death in Staten Island, October 19, 1962; interment in St. Peter’s Cemetery.
