Info | Joel Griffin is an entrepreneur, investor and restauranteur with 25 years of private industry consulting experience and 20 years in government contracting. He is the Founder & CEO of Riphean, a growth management firm focusing on private equity and venture capital, hospitality, and as an angel investor in primarily veteran-owned small businesses.
Through Riphean, Joel seeks to bring new concepts into the region that enhance quality of life, support the growth of entrepreneurs and veteran-owned companies while also backing initiatives in education, workforce and technology.
Within the region, Joel is committed to philanthropy through local nonprofits and organizations that strengthen local communities. His nonprofit of choice is Gwyneth’s Gift Foundation, a 501(c)(3) dedicated to raising awareness and education of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
Gwyneth’s Gift was founded in 2015 by Joel and Jennifer Griffin in honor of their oldest daughter, Gwyneth. Before starting the foundation, Joel and Jennifer co-authored Gwyneth’s Law in Virginia, which requires AED placement in all public schools in Virginia, mandatory annual Hands-Only CPR training for all Virginia public school teachers and Hands-Only CPR training for all Virginia high school students.
Before beginning his career, Joel Griffin served in the United States Marine Corps from 1992 – 2000. Throughout his time in the Marines, he served as an infantry rifleman, a member of the Silent Drill Team and as part of the Marine Corps Intelligence Activity Command.
Following active duty, Joel transitioned to civilian life as a government contractor. While working in his first civilian job at Lockheed Martin supporting a contract at the Pentagon, he was awarded the Patriotic Civilian Service Award by the U.S. Army for actions taken immediately and following 9/11 at the Pentagon in 2001.
Joel has been recognized for his impact and leadership within the region and has been actively involved in a large number of economic development, workforce development, educational and non-profit initiatives. Through his service as Chairman for Stafford County Economic Development Authority, Joel led grant initiatives to provide COVID-19 relief funding to locally owned or operated businesses in 2020, deploying over $1.2M.
He has also led the county’s broadband expansion initiative in collaboration with State and Federal Elected Officials, resulting in the expansion of broadband to the Widewater region. More recently, he supported the contribution of $750,000 to Germanna Community College for the expansion of its health sciences and cybersecurity programs at its new Stafford County Campus. Joel has also been working to foster economic development through partnership with RIoT, a 501(c)(3), to create an Entrepreneurial Technology Community that grows entrepreneurship in the region.
