Info | Daryl was born in Jackson, Mississippi at a time that stretched the very fabric of our nation. His parents were public school teachers in Jackson. With their help, Daryl learned about life at home and in the classroom. He learned the value of education and the impact leaders can have on their communities.
In high school, Daryl was a leader in the classroom, among his peers and on the field. He was valedictorian of Lanier High School in 1973. Daryl was elected "Mr. Lanier," and President of the Mississippi State Association of Student Councils. In addition, Daryl won the high school city track championship in the mile
run.
After demonstrating his leadership in high school, Daryl made history by becoming the first African-American from Mississippi to attend any United States Military Academy when he was accepted to the Air Force Academy. At the Air Force Academy, Daryl was a middle weight boxing champion, the Cadet Vice Wing Commander, and in 1977 graduated with honors with a degree in Mathematics.
In 1990, Daryl ran for and won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives, while limiting contributions to his campagin to $100 per person. Daryl ran an impressive campaign by beating five other better known Democrats and a Republican in a very conservative, military district that was 70% white and elected a Republican the election before. With two years as a public servant under his belt, Daryl ran another noteworthy campaign and won a seat in the Florida Senate.
