Info | First elected to the provincial legislature on March 24, 1998, Maureen has represented Halifax Needham for the past eleven years. During this time she has held a variety of critic responsibilities, including Health, Education, the Status of Women, Public Service Commission, African Nova Scotian Affairs, Health Promotion, Mental Heath and Health Reform.
Maureen has been hard-working and accessible. She has devoted many hours to working with members of her community to improve neighbourhood safety, local schools, recreational and cultural venues, affordable housing, health services, assistance for training and post-secondary education and small business.
Prior to her election, Maureen was a faculty member at the Maritime School of Social Work, where she taught social policy and community development. Maureen was educated at St. Francis Xavier (B.A.), Dalhousie (M.S.W.), and Warwick (Ph.D.)
Maureen's past employment includes social work at the Nova Scotia Hospital (Adolescent Services), advocacy at Dalhousie Legal Aid, and community development with the North End Clinic and the North End Parent Resource Centre. She has also worked as a researcher with CBC - 1st Edition and with a group of university faculty members who published Vanishing Jobs: Canada's Changing Workplaces.
Maureen has been a committed community activist and volunteer with a variety of organizations such as the Halifax Credit Union, Bryony House, the John Hugh MacKenzie Seniors Housing Co-op, and Ad Sum House.
Maureen hails from Antigonish County, and resides in Halifax's historic hydrostone area.
