InfoEducated at Sydney Academy and graduated (1960). After attending St. Francis Xavier College, Sydney Campus and the University College of Cape Breton, Manning MacDonald graduated from the Institute of Public Affairs at Dalhousie University.

The Mayor of Sydney for 15 years, the city’s longest sitting mayor in history, Manning has proven his capability in bringing the economic development of Cape Breton to new heights. He was involved in the ‘Sydney Waterfront Project’ and a strong voice for Cape Breton School Board, Sydney Police Commission and Metropolitan Planning Commission- as well as the construction of Centre 200.

Manning is a former Provincial Cabinet Minister. His education, background and extensive political, municipal and private career experiences have prepared him to be a leader at whatever he chooses to do. Currently the Liberal Critic for Economic Development, Energy, Community Services and NSBI, Manning is well aware of issues facing his province and his constituency. Since 1993, Manning has been active and has chaired many committees while involved in the Nova Scotia Legislature. He is presently Liberal Party House Leader.

Always active in his community, Manning has coached Little League Baseball, was Chair of the Cape Breton Oilers of the American Hockey League. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant (N), 1978 and received Canadian Forces Decoration for service to Canada.

Manning’s strong supporters from Sydney are his wife Ann, and their family.
