InfoBefore entering Parliament Paul worked as a Storeman/Clerk (1974-78); Organiser Storeman and Packers Union (Tas. Branch) (1978-80); Secretary Storeman and Packers Union (Tas. Branch) 1980-84); and Senior Vice President Federated Storeman and Packers Union of Australia (1982-84).

Paul was Secretary of the Tasmanian Trades and Labor Council between 1984-89; and Assistant General Manager, Development, Tasmanian Development Authority in 1989-90.

He was a Member of the ACTU Executive, and won a Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship in 1986.

In 1987 he was a member of an Australian Delegation to the International Labor Organisation conference held in Geneva.

Elected to Parliament in 1990 he held the positions of Opposition Deputy Leader and Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Workplace Standards/Workers' Compensation, Public Sector Management, Forests, Mines, Racing and Gaming and Leader of Business in the House of Assembly.

He was a member of the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee from 1990-96.

Paul previously held the positions of Opposition Whip and Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Forestry, Racing and Gaming.

Paul was re-elected to Parliament in September 1998 and upon the election of the Bacon Labor Government became Deputy Premier, Minister for Infrastructure, Energy & Resources and Minister for Racing & Gaming.

Following the election in 2002, Paul held the position of Deputy Premier and Minister for Economic Development, Energy and Resources, and Minister for Racing and Sport and Recreation.

He became Acting Premier in February 2004 following Jim Bacon's announcement that he would step down due to ill health.

Paul was sworn in as Tasmania's 42nd Premier on 21 March 2004.

He is now Premier and Treasurer.

He is married with two children and a grandson.
