Info | Peggy Nash believes it is time for residents of Toronto to have better representation in Ottawa. Jack Layton and the NDP budget amendments last spring gave our Toronto more money for transit, education and housing-more than Liberal MPs have done in 12 years. Peggy is set to build the NDP voice to create a stronger democracy and a government that works much better for the majority of Canadians.
In the 2004 federal election, Peggy raised key issues that are important to Parkdale-High Park-including improved transit, environmental progress, quality childcare, strong public Medicare and greater commitment to women's equality and arts and culture. Along with negotiating good jobs in the auto industry, she has continued to speak out for public Medicare and child care, defended the right to free and democratic elections in Ukraine, and worked to end violence against women.
Peggy's roots go generations deep in the Parkdale-High Park community. Along with her partner Carl, they have raised their 3 sons here, living for many years at their home on Garden and then Parkside Drive. Peggy's youngest son graduated from Western Tech where his grandfather graduated 60 years ago.For almost 20 years, Peggy has participated fully in the community life of this riding.
As a lifelong advocate of progressive social change, Peggy has led union collective bargaining with some of the largest corporations in the world and some of the smallest community agencies and businesses. Her success is due to her ability to grapple with difficult problems and find practical solutions that make a positive difference in the lives of working people, their families and their communities. Peggy has:
* Worked with top business, labour and community leaders to raise funds as a member of the 2005 United Way of Greater Toronto Cabinet Committee
* Helped create the NDP Green Car Strategy with Greenpeace and the Canadian Auto Workers to promote more responsible, sustainable investment in auto manufacturing;
* Supported Eva's Phoenix, a community project to assist homeless youth by offering them a chance to develop practical skills while getting off the street; · Negotiated employer-paid child development and care programs to provide quality care for the children of shift workers;
* Taken action to end violence against women and children by advocating for women in the workplace, creating worker training programs, and securing ongoing financial support for women's shelters and agencies including Parkdale's Redwood Shelter.
* Negotiated with Ford Canada as the first union woman responsible for major auto negotiations in North America.
Peggy is an internationally recognized Canadian spokesperson on a range of issues such as labour market policy, trade and the economy, human rights and social policy. A frequent media commentator in English and French, she has been invited to speak at many national and international conferences such as the World Social Forum in Porto Allegre, Brazil.
As a long-time human rights activist, Peggy represented Canada as an Official Observer in the first post-apartheid elections in South Africa in 1994, and in the 2004 Ukrainian election. She appeared before the Federal Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration on the Safe Third Country Regulations, to oppose restrictions on the ability of refugees to gain safe access to Canada.
Peggy was recently a key speaker at the Ontario government's conference on domestic violence. Peggy attended the UN conference Beijing +12 on the status of women in 2005.
Peggy is the winner of two gold awards from The Sierra Club of Canada for her leadership on the NDP's Green Car Strategy and Toronto's public transit campaign. In 2004, she was awarded a certificate of honour from the City of Toronto for her contribution to women's equality.
Peggy has an honours BA in French language and literature from the University of Toronto.
Peggy is a national figure, with strong local roots, who can speak effectively for all communities in Parkdale-High Park.
