Info | Suzanne Kosmas, a former State Representative and a successful small business owner, has served her community for over 30 years and will help bring change, responsibility and accountability to Congress.
Kosmas was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1996 and was re-elected three times, serving four consecutive terms before being term-limited. In the state legislature, she earned praise for her moderate, common-sense approach to government and served in the Democratic leadership within her caucus.
As the State Representative for District 28, Kosmas successfully fought for children's issues, including more money for local schools and helped improve health care for senior citizens. A fiscal conservative, Kosmas also voted to eliminate taxes on investments, joined successful efforts to quash a proposed tax on services, and has been supported by the Florida Chamber of Commerce in the past.
In their editorial endorsing her 2002 reelection campaign, the Daytona Beach News-Journal wrote that "Kosmas has been instrumental in focusing both Republicans and Democrats on building consensus on issues like education and child safety."
Kosmas is the owner of Prestige Properties, a real estate company located in New Smyrna Beach since 1979. She was active in planning and the development of an award-winning environmentally planned community in New Smyrna Beach.
Kosmas has been active in her community for over 30 years, and served as Chair of the Board for the United Way of Volusia County. She has served on the executive board of many local organizations including: the United Way Women's Initiative, the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Friends of Spruce Creek Preserve, and Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity. She was Vice President of the Volusia/Flagler Boys & Girls Club and served for many years on Volusia County's Planning and Zoning Board as well as the Cultural Arts Advisory Board.
Kosmas is a member of Coronado Methodist Church, where she recently served on a mission team assisting in construction of a pre-school in Guatemala. Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity recently recognized Kosmas for leadership in initiating the first "women build" home in New Smyrna Beach, constructed for a single mother with children.
Suzanne Kosmas has lived in New Smyrna Beach since 1973 and has four children: Paul, Michael, David, and Kristen.
