Info | CLUNIE, Thomas Jefferson, a Representative from California; born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, March 25, 1852, while his parents were on a visit there from Massachusetts; moved with his parents to California in 1854; returned to the East and settled in Maine, and then went back to California in 1861; attended the public schools; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1868 and commenced practice in Sacramento in 1870; member of the State assembly in 1875; delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1884; served in the State senate 1887-1889; took an active part in the State militia, and was retired as brigadier general; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-first Congress (March 4, 1889-March 3, 1891); was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1890 to the Fifty-second Congress; resumed the practice of his profession; died in San Francisco, Calif., on June 30, 1903; interment in the City Cemetery, Sacramento, Calif
