InfoBorn in 1949 and raised on a mixed farm near Warman SK, Nettie now farms with her husband Jim Robbins on Maida Vale Farms, close to Laura, SK. They grow organic grains and pulse crops and raise beef cattle. Nettie is a professor of ethics at St. Andrew's College, University of Saskatchewan.

Nettie and Jim have four children - three are students at the University of Saskatchewan and the fourth is finishing high school.

Nettie's background:

* National Farmers Union President, 1995-1998. Nettie is the first and only woman to lead a national farm organization in Canada.
* Board of Directors, North/South Institute, 1991-1998.
* Canadian Delegate at the World Food Summit, Rome, 1996.
* Leadership candidate, Saskatchewan New Democratic Party, 2001.
* Ph.D. in Philosophy, University of Calgary, 1983.

Nettie's volunteer work:

* Active participation in her own community;
* Vice-Chair of the Farmer Rail Car Coalition, a coalition of farm organizations working to gain ownership of the federal grain car fleet;
* Executive member of ETC group, an international research organization focusing on technologies and corporate concentration;
* Coordinator for the North America region of Via Campesina, a global movement of peasants and small-scale farmers; and
* Ongoing work with many organizations in support of healthy food systems, sustainable farming, and prosperous rural communities.

Her passions, participation, and recognition:

* Active participant in public policy forums around the world, speaking on issues such as sustainable agriculture and rural communities, trade, women's equality, and food sovereignty.
* Distinguished Canadian Award, Council of Canadians, 1999.
* Global Citizen of the Year, Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation, 1994.
* Working in solidarity with those disadvantaged by globalization, racism, and militarism as part of the global movements for justice.
