Info | Mike Whalen is a family man, entrepreneur and a concerned citizen.
As a father of two children, Christopher and Katie, Mike and his wife Kim understand the joys and challenges families face. As an entrepreneur, Mike brings real world business experience to his campaign.
More than once he has faced the daunting challenge of making payroll, satisfying regulators and meeting the goal of building a business in tough economic times.
In recognition of this, Mike Whalen was named Entrepreneur of the Year in 1991 by Inc. Magazine and was given the Entrepreneurial Success Award by the US Small Business Administration in 1993.
Mike’s first restaurant was the Iowa Machine Shed opened in Davenport, Iowa in 1978. Since then he has gone on to open many other hotels and restaurants in Iowa employing hundreds of Iowans and promoting great Iowa cooking and the value of Iowa agriculture.
But Mike has not focused only on his family and business; he has also been active in the effort to reform Social Security so that it will be there for the next generation.
Mike is a national board member of the National Center for Policy Analysis and has actively led the effort in Iowa to gain support for saving Social Security. His work has been covered in the Des Moines Register, Quad City Times and many other publications across the state.
Mike Whalen is committed to our country and will take an entrepreneurial enthusiasm to Congress. We need Mike Whalen’s experience and steady hand representing us in the First Congressional District.
