Info | BROCK, William Emerson, (grandfather of William Emerson Brock III), a Senator from Tennessee; born near Mocksville, Davie County, N.C., March 14, 1872; attended the public schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1894; moved to Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1894 and was employed as a clerk in a general store until 1896; tobacco salesman 1896-1901; moved to Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1909 and became engaged in the manufacture of candy; also was interested in banking and various other business enterprises and was director in a life and accident insurance company; served as trustee of the University of Chattanooga, Emory and Henry College, and Martha Washington College for Girls; appointed on September 2, 1929, and subsequently elected on November 4, 1930, as a Democrat to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lawrence D. Tyson and served from September 2, 1929, to March 3, 1931; was not a candidate for election to the full term; resumed the candy manufacturing business until his death in Chattanooga, Tenn., August 5, 1950; interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.
