Eugene L. Dimanna, an Italian a tavern owner, was elected to the Denver City Council in 1971. He clashed frequently with the Hispanic members of his district who accused him of co-operating with the police in a harassment campaign. Dimanna was subject to Colorado’s first successful recall of an elected official in 1975. Dimanna won again at the February 1975 special election. The regular municipal election in May 1975 was too close and Dimanna was defeated in the June runoff election.
