Info | Edward J. Mapel began his career as a road showman. He later settled down to open the Gem Hotel and Theatre in Walsenburg, Colorado. He was outspoken as a city councilman (once calling the AMA “pikers” for rules that limited used of Denver General Hospital beds), but entertainment was in his blood. After leaving the City Council, Mapel moved Las Vegas. He was an investor in some of the early Las Vegas casinos including The Mint and the Sahara. Mapel’s investments paid off and he left a large estate to his wife Rose. Unfortunately, Rose married a younger man shortly after Mapel’s death who murdered her for the money.
