| Info | Eugene Madden, a second generation Irishman, was a successful tavern keeper and alderman for the 1st Ward, which then covered the West Denver neighborhood of Auraria. He did more than represent the area before the city council. He ran the neighborhood like a fiefdom from his saloon at 1140 Larimer Street. Constituents could call on him at any time to bail relatives out of jail, or find to them jobs or homes. He asked only that they remember him on Election Day. Voter turnout in his ward was often 100 percent. Madden once lived in 1047 Ninth Street, one of the houses preserved on the Auraria Campus.
