Charley represents the 21st Middlesex District comprised of Burlington, Bedford and Wilmington (3rd Precinct) having been first elected in 1996. Born and raised in Burlington with his five sisters and brothers, he graduated from Burlington High School in 1983, Villanova University in 1987, and Vermont Law School in 1990.
In 1989, while a second year law student, Charley joined the United States Marine Corps where he served until November, 1994. While on active duty with the Marines he attained the rank of Captain and was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina. During his tour of
duty he served for six months as the Staff Judge Advocate for the Marine commanding officer aboard the USS Guadalcanal that deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Mogadishu, Somalia, as part of the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable).
Additionally, while stationed in North Carolina he served as a military prosecutor and Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina. During his time in the courtroom he handled a wide variety of cases from simple assault to serious felonies.
Upon his return to Burlington he worked briefly for a law firm in New Bedford, Massachusetts, prior to opening his own law offices in Burlington and Lowell. During that time he served on the Burlington Conservation Commission before his election to Beacon Hill.
Charley currently serves on the Committee on Criminal Justice and as a member of the new Committee on Homeland Security and Federal Affairs. He also serves as a member of a special committee on veteran affairs.
Charley currently works part time for the law firm of Gibson & Behman, P.C. and lives in Burlington with his wife Nan, an elementary school teacher in Wilmington and their daughters Grace and Amelia.
