EDWARD D. DIPRETE was born in Cranston, Rhode Island. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and served in the U.S. Navy, holding the rank of lietenant commander in the Naval Reserve. He received honarary degrees from Holy Cross, Providence College, Rhode Island College, the University of Rhode Island, and Bryant College. DiPrete was elected to the Cranston School Committee in 1970, reelected in 1972, and served as chair until 1974. He was elected as an at-large member of the Cranston City Council in 1974 and was reelected in 1976. He was elected Cranston mayor in 1978 and was relected in 1982. Prior to his election as mayor, he was vice president of the Frank A. DiPrete Realty Company. He was elected Rhode Island Governor in 1984. Governor DiPrete chaired the Coalition of the Northeastern Governors and the New England Governors' Conference. He also chaired the Rhode Island Partnership for Science and Technology. In December 1998, he pleaded guilty to bribery, extortion and racketeering, admitting he accepted $250,000 in exchange for state contracts and he reported to prison at the end of that month.
