Upon obtaining a religious education at the Episcopal Canisius school in Ahaus in 1995, Spahn became a member of the Ahaus City Council in 1999 at age 19. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in 2002 from the University of Hagen, Spahn ran for Parliament in the constituency of Stenfurt I - Borken I and won, a position he's held to date.
Under the arm of "crown prince' of the CDU, Wolfgang Schauble, Spahn became his Parliamentary Secretary of State for Finance in 2015, and appeared groomed for higher things when he was tapped Federal Minister of Health in the Merkel cabinet in March 2018.
Spahn announced his intention to stand for election as CDU chairman upon Chancellor Merkel's retirement in the face of recent election results in Hesse.
