While her husband served as US Vice President, Esther often served the role of First Lady because Ida McKinley was not able to serve. Esther Hobart helped to resolve a diplomatic wrangle between the British Ambassador to the US and VP Hobart about who should be consider higher in rank by inviting the Ambassador and his wife to their residence. The invitation caused the British Ambassador to stand down in his claim to hold a higher position.
Died 1/8/1941 at the home of her son Garret A. Hobart Jr. in Haledon NJ. She had been in a coma for two weeks.
