Info | James Brown began serving on the Lexington City Council as the 1st District Councilmember after he was appointed by former Mayor Jim Gray in 2015. He was elected to four more terms before he ran for Council At-Large and was elected to that position in 2022. He is the first African American to serve At-Large in Lexington.
Councilmember James Brown is a native of Lexington, Ky. He is a Paul Laurence Dunbar High School graduate. Before becoming a Councilmember , Mr. Brown was previously employed at Lexmark and GTE before beginning a career in the automotive industry, working for 13 years at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Georgetown, Ky. After that, James became a full-time real estate professional, selling residential and commercial property for United Real Estate.
Councilmember James Brown is highly passionate about service to neighborhoods and the local school system. He has served as the President of the Radcliffe–Marlboro Neighborhood Association and helped initiate several neighborhood programs. In addition, he served as the First Vice President of the 16th District PTA and has participated in the Fayette County Public Schools superintendent search process and the 2015 Rezoning Committee. Councilmember James Brown also led the Neighborhood Task Force in 2019.
