Info | born in Jackson, Madison County, Tenn., August 1, 1894; attended the public and high schools; was graduated from Union University at Jackson, Tenn., in 1914 and from the law department of Cumberland University at Lebanon, Tenn., in 1917; taught high school in Pinson and Alamo, Tenn., 1914-1916; during the First World War served overseas in the United States Army as a private in the Ordnance Department, Fifth Army Corps, in 1918 and 1919; was admitted to the bar in 1917 and commenced practice in Jackson, Tenn., in 1919; district attorney general for the twelfth judicial circuit of Tennessee from 1922 until his resignation in 1933 to become associated with the office of the Solicitor of the Post Office Department at Washington, D.C., and served from 1933 to 1942; chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of Madison County, Tenn., 1924-1933; member of the State Democratic Executive Committee of Tennessee in 1923 and 1924; delegate to the Democratic National Conventions in 1928, 1932, and 1936; elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth and to the eleven succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1943-January 3, 1967); chairman, Committee on the Post Office and Civil Service (Eighty-first, Eighty-second, and Eighty-fourth through Eighty-ninth Congresses); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1966 to the Ninetieth Congress; resided in Jackson, Tenn., until his death there November 28, 1971; interment in Hollywood Cemetery.
