Info | born in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tenn., June 23, 1890; educated in the public schools and Baylor Preparatory School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and the University of Virginia at Charlottesville; was graduated from Chattanooga College of Law in 1914; was admitted to the bar in 1914 and commenced the practice of law in Chattanooga, Tenn.; during the First World War volunteered for service on April 21, 1917, and was discharged as a major in March 1919; appointed United States attorney for the eastern district of Tennessee on September 25, 1933, and served until his resignation on April 12, 1948; elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1949-January 3, 1963); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1962 to the Eighty-eighth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he died October 30, 1978; interment in Forest Hills Cemetery.
