Info | State Sen. & Attorney
Senator Buddy Dyer was born in Orlando and raised in Kissimmee, Florida, the son of a long-haul truck driver. Following graduation from Osceola High School, Dyer was awarded a scholarship to attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Upon graduating from Brown, Dyer, where he earned an engineering degree, Dyer returned to Florida to work as an environmental engineer. After working as an engineer for four years Dyer enrolled in the University of Florida Law School. During law school, Dyer was named Editor-In-Chief of the Law Review and, after graduation, received the highest score on the Florida Bar Exam in 1987.
In 1992, Senator Dyer defeated Candy Crawford, former Florida Agriculture Commissioner Bob Crawford's sister, in a tough Democratic primary and run-off that few expected him to win. He went on to win the general election and has been re-elected by the people of Central Florida on two different occasions.
Senator Dyer, who was elected by his colleagues to serve as the State Senate Democratic Leader for the past three years, is considered one of the"new generation" Florida Democrats who has emerged to make the party successful again winning statewide elections.
Senator Dyer is a shareholder with the Orlando firm of Winderweedle, Haines, Ward and Woodman. He is married to Karen Dyer, also an attorney, and they have two sons, Trey (11) and Drew (6).
