| Info | As a first generation American, Joe has been driven all his life to give back to the community, state and country that have given him and his family the freedom and opportunity to succeed. A successful attorney, civic leader and public servant, he has worked hard to ensure that others have those same opportunities. His belief that all Coloradans should have the opportunity to be active participants in our democracy, shaped by his parent’s journey and experience, has been a guiding principle in his professional and civic career.
n 2008, Joe was elected to represent Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District on the CU Board of Regents. As one of Colorado’s youngest elected officials, he was awarded the Colorado Democratic Party’s “Rising Star Award” two years later. He previously served as Vice-Chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee on the Board, and Chair of the Regent Audit Committee for two years. As a Regent, Joe has worked to build consensus on tough issues, sponsoring several resolutions that received bi-partisan and unanimous support. In 2011, he authored a resolution to make voter registration more accessible to students, an effort that was applauded nationally and which the Board of Regents ultimately approved unanimously. Prior to his election as Regent, Joe was appointed by the Boulder City Council to serve as a Commissioner on the Boulder Housing Authority, and also worked at the State Capitol for then-Speaker of the House, Andrew Romanoff.
As a son of African immigrants, Joe learned early on the value of hard work and perseverance. He values the sacred freedoms we enjoy in our great country, beginning with the right to vote and participate in our democracy. In 2006, Joe co-founded New Era Colorado, a non-profit foundation aimed at fostering the involvement of youth in the political process. New Era Colorado has since registered tens of thousands of young voters across the State, and has been at the forefront in championing legislation to ensure fair and accessible elections.
Joe currently practices law as an associate at a presitigious Denver law firm, where he focuses his practice on employment, commercial litigation, and election law. He was selected for inclusion in the 2012 and 2013 Colorado Super Lawyers—Rising Stars list and was recently awarded the Distinguished Recent Alumnus Award from the University of Colorado Law School.
Joe lives with his fiancée, Andrea, in Broomfield with their puppy—a pug-Aussie mix named Teddy.
