Info | Thomas Dougherty was sworn in as the 17th U.S. Ambassador to Burkina Faso on August 10, 2010. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor. His prior assignments were Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, acting Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of African Affairs, and Director for West African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
After joining the State Department in 1989, Ambassador Dougherty served overseas in Dakar, Senegal; Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo; Asmara, Eritrea; Bonn, Germany; and Yaounde, Cameroon. He then served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Lilongwe, Malawi, and as Deputy Chief of Mission in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A native of Wyoming, Ambassador Dougherty graduated from Brown University. His foreign languages are German, Italian, Arabic, and French.
