Info | Elinor Caplan, Member of Parliament for Thornhill, was elected to the House of Commons in June 1997 and re-elected in November 2000.
On January 15, 2002, she was named Minister of National Revenue. She had been Minister of Citizenship and Immigration from August 1999 to January 2002.
Prior to entering Cabinet, she had been Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health. She had also previously served as Vice-Chair of the Standing Committee on Health and was a member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.
Prior to the 1997 federal election, Mrs. Caplan was the Ontario Provincial Member of Parliament for the riding of Oriole from 1985-1997, serving as Minister of Health from September 1987 to October 1990. During that time, she also chaired the Cabinet Committee on Social Policy and had been Chair of Management Board of Cabinet, Minister of Government Services and Chair of the Cabinet.
Prior to entering provincial politics, Mrs. Caplan served as Alderman for Ward 13 in the City of North York from 1978 to 1985. As Chair of the North York Development and Economic Growth Committee, Mrs. Caplan founded the North York Business Association.
From 1973 to 1978, Mrs. Caplan was President of Elinor Caplan and Associates, specializing in real estate title searching and conveyancing.
Mrs. Caplan and her husband Wilf have four children and six grandchildren.
